State Tournament - Eighth Place
The Hanford Falcons did all they could to stop Dustin Jones.

They had a man on him at all times, they pressured him, and never let him out of their sights.

But the Squalicum sharpshooter still beat them, draining a 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds remaining to lead the Storm (23-6) past the Falcons 61-58 in the fifth place-eighth place game at the 3A state tournament Saturday in the Tacoma Dome.

The loss sends Hanford (24-5) home with an eighth-place trophy.

But it was a bittersweet reward for the Falcons, one tempered with the disappointment of being seconds from ending the season with a three-game winning streak.

"It's a brutal way to end the season," Hanford coach Paul Mayer said. "The kids are disappointed. That was a special performance it took to beat us. The kid made some shots and we missed some. They made plays when they had to, we didn't."

The kid Mayer was referring to was Jones, a 6-foot-3 senior forward.

After beginning the game shooting 1-of-12 from the floor in the first half, Jones made six 3-pointers in the second half, four in the fourth quarter, and scored 22 of his game-high 27 points in the second half.

In the game's final minute, he made every big play.

With the game tied at 58 with 44 seconds remaining, Jones stole an inbounds pass.

That set up his game-winning 3, in which he was well defended and falling backwards.

On the ensuing Hanford possession, Jones tipped away a long pass at halfcourt and time expired before the Falcons could attempt a shot.

"We live and die by (3-pointers)," Squalicum coach Mike McKee said. "(Jones) has a shooter's mentality. It's not his job to stop shooting, it's mine to take him out if he's not making them. He understands that and I think it gives him confidence."

Jones made seven 3-pointers for the game, though the official book credits him with six.

Chad Clark, a Squalicum guard, is credited with one.

However, three different reporters, the Squalicum scorebook and Clark all verified that Clark did not make a shot.

Still, Jones set an official tournament record for 3-point field goals (18) and attempts (52), as did his team (31-of-99).

And yet, it took a record performance to defeat the Falcons, who controlled much of the game until midway through the third quarter.

Hanford broke open a tight game in the third quarter, opening the period on a 12-3 run to take a 43-32 lead with 3:25 remaining in the quarter.

The Falcons defense was forcing the Storm into questionable shot selection.
But Jones made two 3-pointers to end the third quarter as Squalicum closed on a 10-0 run to trail 43-42 after three quarters.

The teams traded leads in the fourth, never more than three points apart.
Hanford took a 58-56 lead with 1:31 remaining on a layup and free throw by Admir Beribak.

Beribak, though, missed the front end of a one-and-one with 1:07 to go, allowing the Storm to tie the game on a John Ellingson jumper.
On the ensuing inbounds play, Jones made the steal that would set up his game-winning shot.

"It's tough, because we didn't make plays," Mayer said. "We had the one-and-one we didn't get on one end and we couldn't execute an inbounds pass. But still, give them credit. They had to make shots when they did."
